Car Repair Service
Since air conditioning is now standard equipment on practically all of cars, understanding the car repair service needed for cooling your car can save you money. Because of the amount of time people spend in their cars, smaller cars automatically come with an air-conditioning unit, and larger cars such as SUV’s and vans come with two units – front and rear. Many extended warranties do not include air-conditioning, and fixing it can be quite costly. If you can diagnose the problem yourself, you may be able to prevent car ac repair shops from overcharging you or doing unnecessary work. Here are a few tips.
First, make sure coolant tanks are full of Freon, by adding just a few ounces to start. If you car feels cooler after adding Freon, it could mean that you were just running low on Freon, as most cars use about 15% each year, not including the effects caused by winter. However, if the problem recurs shortly, it probably means that you have a leak in you cooling system. You can save money if you can check for leaks yourself or go to a car repair service station.
To check for leaks, look for wetness or corrosion in the hose, at the fittings (where rubber and aluminum are welded), and at the o-rings (at each connection). Any of these can be replaced inexpensively. If you can’t find the leak easily, you can purchase an auto air conditioner recharging and measuring system that will give color to the Freon, making it easier for you to spot the problem. If that does not work, have a car ac repair shop use an electronic leak detector.
On the other hand, if you add Freon, and there is no change in how your car feels, it probably means that you have a blockage in your system. In this case, it may be wise to visit a car air conditioning service garage.
Another way to diagnose a need for air conditioning service is to check to see you have fluctuations in you Rotations Per Minute (RPM) when you turn you’re a/c on and off.
Remember, when your air-conditioner is in use, it is putting additional stress on your engine and compressor. You can cause damage to your vehicle by running your malfunctioning air-conditioner. If you car is not cool, try to fix your problem or visit you car repair service station as soon as possible.
