Deer Collision Auto Service Is On The Rise

Friday, December 18th, 2009

There is a better chance of hitting a deer with your vehicle today than ever before. Deer-auto collisions are at the highest rates and the number of accidents is expected to keep climbing. If you don’t want to end up needing extensive auto repairs, you need to know how to keep your car from hitting a deer.

Your chances of hitting a deer are much higher in certain regions of the country than others. West Virginia has recorded more deer collisions than any other state. Other states with high numbers of collisions include Michigan and Montana. Also, if you live in the suburbs or rural areas you are much more likely to find your vehicle in the repair shop due to a deer than a city dweller.

In order to avoid unnecessary auto service as a result of a deer collision, be sure to drive slowly and keep your eyes peeled for animals on the side of the road. This is especially true while driving at dawn and dusk. Another important fact to know is that more than half of all accidents happen in the fall.  While not all deer collisions can be avoided some certainly can. Taking the necessary precautions to avoid hitting a deer is a good idea. And it will certainly save you money on auto repairs!

Auto Service Laws

Monday, December 14th, 2009

There are laws in place to protect customers from untrustworthy car repair shops. These laws offer a wall of protection to help prevent you from being cheated. Some of these laws include:

The right to a written estimate. You have the right to get a written estimate of the work that needs to be done to your vehicle. That is, if the work that needs to be done exceeds one hundred dollars and you ask for it in person. The facility is then not allowed to charge you more than 10% over the written estimated price of the repair.

The right to fight charges in some circumstances. A repair shop cannot hold your vehicle for lack of payment if the bill is over 110% of the written estimate, if there was face-to-face contact and no written estimate was offered, or is there is no “You Customer Rights” sign posted in the auto repair shop.

In order to keep yourself from being cheated you need to know your rights. Getting a written estimate and detailed invoice are always important. These two actions will prevent you from overpaying for auto service.

Auto Service: Safely Driving on Black Ice

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

While I was driving home from work last night I began to slide a bit on the roads. It hadn’t been snowing so this sliding caught me completely off guard. Then I realized what it was: black ice. Black ice is a real winter time hazard. If you are looking for ways to avoid a trip to the repair shop this winter then you need to know how to properly drive on black ice.

First, be sure your tires are in good condition. If the treads on your car’s tires are worn you will have a harder time gaining traction on an icy road. Take your car into a car repair shop to have your tires looked at.  If you have good tires and adequate air pressure you will find it much easier to drive on black ice.

Driving on black ice can be tricky. If you find yourself sliding on black ice immediately take your foot off of the gas pedal. However, you don’t want to slam the brakes either. Slowly steering in the direction your car is sliding will help you to quickly regain control of your vehicle.

Black ice is especially hazardous on bridges, overpasses and roadways near water. If you find yourself driving through any of these locations, take it slow and watch for black ice on the roadway. By taking these simple precautions you will be able to avoid an accident and the need for collision auto service.

Auto Service That Keeps You Warm

Monday, December 7th, 2009

As I woke up this morning, something caught my eye. It was snowing! I got ready for work and went outside to start my car. I turned on the heat in my vehicle and thought to myself how glad I am that I have heat in my car. I am also very glad to have a defroster so that I don’t have to scrape the windshield!

Today, all of my winter auto service preparations have begun to pay off. Are you ready? While there is just a dusting of snow on the ground today, I realize this is just the beginning. If your car isn’t ready for the snow take it to an auto repair shop today. If the heat doesn’t work in the car, a car repair shop can fix it! Don’t spend the winter cold and miserable while driving.

When you bundle up today to head outside, think about all of the auto repair needs on your car. Have you made all of the adjustments for winter yet? If you still have a repair or two, head to the repair shop on your lunch break. You don’t want to be caught unprepared by the snow!

Last Minute Winter Auto Service

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

As the snow is quickly approaching, you may realize there is some car weatherization that still needs to be done. If that’s the case, it is certainly not too late. On the other hand, you may have winterized your car but forgotten a detail or two. Either way, here are a couple of important things you need to have done before your car is entirely ready for the winter.

Change fluid. Have you taken your vehicle to a car repair shop to have the fluid changed? This is especially important in regions with a colder climate. Regular windshield wiper fluid and coolant solutions should be changed over to winter solutions before the freezing temperatures arrive. The winter solutions have anti-freezing and deicing agents added to them to prevent the fluids from freezing up.

Check the car battery. Have an auto service shop check your car’s battery. If the battery is more than four years old it should be replaced. If it is under four years old, an auto service shop can check that it is in excellent working condition and will make it through the harsh winter.

Don’t assume your car is in good condition. Freezing temperatures are very hard on a vehicle and the only way to be sure you’ll be safe is to know your car is in good working order.

Holiday Auto Service: Part 3

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

While getting a tune up and a thorough check of your vehicle a few weeks before a road trip is a great idea, there are some things you can do at home to make sure your vehicle is ready for the long drive. Although they may seem like minor auto repairs, these can be the most important of all.

First, check to make sure all of the lights on the entire vehicle are working. From the headlights to the brake lights, all should be in working order. If it has been a while since you have replaced these bulbs it may be a good idea to replace them now. Storing an extra bulb in the glove compartment is smart too.

Next, check the car’s tire pressure. Tires that are underinflated tend to wear faster. Be sure the tires are well inflated to prevent unnecessary auto repair. This includes your spare tire. It is also recommended that you check your tire pressure before departing from your trip and heading home.

Auto service is especially important before driving long distances. Make your trip this holiday season a success by having a reliable car that will safely take you to your destination.

Holiday Auto Service: Part 2

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The last thing you want this holiday season is to have your trip ruined with car trouble. To avoid this, a few weeks before your planned road trip, take your vehicle into a car repair shop to be checked out. Here are a few key things to have a trained mechanic look at before going on a long trip.

Belts

-          Be sure the auto repair shop looks at all of the belts on your vehicle. They should be in excellent condition. If a belt shows any sign of wear and tear, it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace it before driving your vehicle a long distance.

Fluid Levels

-          Many auto repairs can be avoided by maintaining adequate fluid levels in your vehicle. Have the mechanic check your transmission fluid and go ahead and get an oil change too. Also, be sure you have enough windshield wiper fluid in case you end up in bad weather while travelling.

Brakes

-          If you will need new brakes within the next six months it is wise to get them now. Driving long distances can make brakes wear faster.

These are just a few things you need to have looked at or replaced before travelling this holiday season. By ensuring that your car is in good condition, you will be able to enjoy the holidays with family rather than worrying about your car.

Holiday Auto Service: Part 1

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

As the holiday season is fast approaching, many people are preparing for long road trips to visit family and friends. Be sure your car is in excellent condition for this year’s holiday travel. There are things you can do to be sure your vehicle will safely get you to your destination and back this holiday season.

The first thing you should do is take your vehicle to an auto service shop a few weeks before your planned trip. The biggest mistake people make is waiting until the day before or the day of their trip to have their vehicle checked out. By taking your car into an auto service shop well in advance, you will have plenty of time to take care of any necessary auto repairs.

When you take your vehicle into an auto repair shop to be looked at, it is a good idea to take a checklist of things you want inspected. That way, you know your entire vehicle is getting looked over and nothing will be missed. We’ll go over that checklist over the next few days. Some repair shops even sell pre-trip inspection and repair packages. Talk with your local auto repair shop to see if they offer this type of deal.

Dashboard Auto Service Alerts

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Newer vehicles have great features such as airbag sensors and the ability to relay messages about maintenance on the dash. These features allow you to properly maintain your vehicle and make your car safer to drive. There are some messages that may pop up on your dash that cannot be ignored. If this happens, you will need to take the vehicle to a car repair shop to be fixed.

Oil Change Required. This message means that it is time to have your oil changed. When this message comes up your vehicle should be taken to an auto service shop for an oil change soon. You do not want to drive too much on low oil because you will risk damaging your engine.

Low Tire Pressure. This message indicates that at least one of your tires is underinflated. To ensure maximum gas mileage and tire performance, be sure to maintain good tire pressure.

These are just two examples of messages that may be displayed on your dash. If you are unsure what a message means, refer to your owner’s manual about auto repairs. You local repair shop can also help you decipher the messages and fix any problem your vehicle may have.

Auto Service: Paint

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Is your car rusted or scratched? Is there paint chipping off of it? If so, your car may need to be repainted. Repainting a vehicle is not a simple task. It is something best left to an auto service shop to take care of. If you are looking for a car repair shop that provides vehicle painting services, be sure they are qualified by asking a few simple questions.

Are your technicians trained to paint vehicles? The shop’s technicians shouldn’t just know how to paint vehicles through experience or trial and error. They should be trained properly on how to repaint a vehicle. If you want your vehicle to look excellent after being repainted, be sure to find a trained repair shop.

Do you offer a warranty or guarantee? This is another important question to ask a repair shop because there can often be problems with new paint and touch-ups are commonly needed. You may not notice a mistake in the paint until a little later and you will want to have that fixed under warranty.

After taking your vehicle to a trained auto service shop to be painted, your car will be looking brand new in no time!
